A plague has turned all the world's women into brain-eating zombies. Join reporter Kent Zimmer as he takes a hot-air balloon from Colorado to Massachusetts in search of both his girlfriend and a cure. Along the way he encounters hungry undead, psychotic doctors, evil nuns, racist militias, drag queens with machine guns, and stock brokers with greedy intents. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Zombie Bitches from Hell (Audible Audio Edition) Zoot Campbell Bentley Michaels Grand Mal Press Books
I picked this up as a freebie. I figured it would hopefully be satirical, ridiculous, and funny. I got one out of those three, ridiculous. So why two stars, instead of one? Because Zoot Campbell can write some excellent prose. Here's a pros and cons breakdown.Cons: All the characters seemed to be cut from the same cloth. It's like the story only had a single character, but he had many different names. The characters all cracked the same type of joke, they all seemed to think in the same fashion, unless the plot demanded otherwise, it became tiresome very quickly. The absurdity of the story did not match the seriousness of the prose at all, if was off-putting and detracted from the actual story. It was like the author also tried to pack in as many shock inducing plot devices as possible, which again became tiresome. From zombie baby factories to neo-nazies, the reader quickly finds themselves saying "But of course they did" in exasperation at least once each chapter.
Pros: Dude can write! I really wish the author had chosen a serious subject on which to base his fiction, because he has some serious talent. I would not read another story by Zoot Campbell that looked to be in the same vein as Zombie Bitches from Hell, but if he wrote a less satirical plot, I'd likely buy it and actually enjoy it.

Zombie Bitches from Hell (Audible Audio Edition) Zoot Campbell Bentley Michaels Grand Mal Press Books Reviews
I bought this book because the title caught my eye. I knew from that alone this book was worth the read. Some reviews call this book offensive to women, but as a woman I think this is one of the best zombie stories out there. I have not seen enough humorous zombie stories but this is what I was looking for. I cant wait for the sequel.
I ended up liking this book way more than I thought I would. With a premise of all the women in the world turning into zombies and their source of food being "male protein", I really thought I was just getting myself into a silly filler read until I figured out what I REALLY wanted to read.
For the first 10-15% of the book it lived up to my expectations, then it got...well...pretty good! I really appreciated the different take on the zombie virus and really enjoyed how the author showed the "virus" mutate over time. The characters that we meet along the way are heroic, villainous, insane, depraved, disturbed, and hopeful. Really everything you look for in a dystopian survival story.
I would definitely recommend this read to those who enjoy zombie fiction. Definitely be prepared to be disturbed and disgusted through different parts of the story, not just because of gore, but because this book is filled with the types of the characters that you never want to read about, never want to meet, never want to interact with, but are absolutely essential to this type of story.
I also didn't realize this was going to be a series but after reading this FULL LENGTH zombie novel (not a short story or novella) I'll definitely read the rest of the series. I really want to find out what happens next!
Preying on the fears of straight men everywhere.. women are the enemy. Flesh eating brain hungry man eaters prowl the mean streets and they are wearing heels.
It's a silly lighthearted look at the apocalypse rather than a downer of shotgun shells and dog food. Best read in a single serving on a kindle where no one can see the title. I recommend airport terminals, Greyhound busses or a table for one at the local food court.
I'm a fan of transgressive fiction and consider myself virtually unoffendable. But attempts to shock aren't their own justification and after the first couple of chapters, it was hard to see what else Campbell had to offer. A single character (or even a handful of characters) who continually degrade others can add spice to a novel or provide an opportunity for commentary. But when every character seems to act and think the same way, it's hard to escape the impression that you are getting a window into the author's world view.
This novel felt malignant and unpleasant. The plotting was uneven and there were two competing explanations for what even caused the zombie outbreak. As a statement, it's an unsettling read. And as a recreational read, it just isn't enjoyable.
So, pal, do you think you can't be shocked? You've been around the block, you've seen it all. Hell, you were into Howard Stern back in the day, when Stern was setting the standard for disgusting. You are unshockable.
Ha! Guess again! Zombie Bitches From Hell will have you looking guiltily over your shoulder, hoping no one catches you laughing at some of the totally disgusting things Zoot Campbell cooks up in this very unique zombie book. Disgusting, but hilarious.
It's a great premise -- the zombie apocalypse is here, but it's only affecting women. Hence the bitches. And, hey, I get it -- if every woman on earth was out to eat me alive, I would probably call them a bad name or two. But after the 1,000th "bitch", I developed a nervous twitch at the end of my foot, which was just dying to kick someone's ass. Eh, bitch is just a word. I let it go.
Campbell tells a hell of a story and it's a crazy world where he lives. Not many happy endings but lots of colorful characters and the zombies are just incredible. Can zombies really be funny? Yep, when Zoot Campbell writes them, they're damned funny.
But in case you haven't caught the message yet, if you are easily offended, find a different book. This book is for the readers who enjoy a romp through a world gone insane, featuring main characters who slip-slide over the edge of mania from time to time and twists and turns that will keep you reading even after you've decided you might not mind being a zombie bitch, if you could kick some of these characters in the ass.
I'm hoping there's a Zombie Bitches II. I figure there's one or two swear words I haven't heard yet and Campbell is sure to include them next time!
