"The trouble with working in a tower... is that some things are impossible tokeep secret, and our resident 'ghost' definitely falls into that category".
So begins this tale of Darkover. Ten-year-old Hilary, the newest member of the tower's resident telepaths doesn't know it is a secret and Gregori doesn't know he is dead, so the two of them happily play jackstones and keep each other company.
Unfortunately, Hilary expresses a desire for some dried fruit while sitting around the table with six others and Gregori materializes the fruit but not himself. The Keeper of the Tower is not amused and orders Damon, another member of the Tower, to "work with her, find out what this 'Gregori' is, and get rid of it."
Of course, neither Gregori nor Hilary cares for the "getting rid of" part of this plan and Damon finds himself caught between a very appealing ghost and a superior whom he respects. His solution leaves him, Hilary, and Gregori all a little sad, but sure that this is the best way possible.
The Darkover series was begun in 1960 by the late Marion Zimmer Bradley and has
been continued since her death by a number of authors. It still has a slight
feel of 60's science fiction, but writers like Waters or Mercedes Lackey
easily overcome that. The one major drawback of sampling the series randomly
in fairly recent short stories is the lack of a back story and a glossary of
terms. Depending on how much the reader's enjoyment depends on being able to
visualize the events, it could be very frustrating or just mildly annoying.
The latter in this case.
